I first met Jack in 1959 when about 90 6th graders graduated from a few different elementary schools and began 7th grade at Hoover Junior.  There were only three homerooms of us, as we were "half year" graduates, advancing to the next grade in January of every year instead of June.  Jack came from Hoover, while I came from Horace Mann.  Jack was in my homeroom, and we became friends immediately.  It was an advantage to both of us as he introduced me to his friends, and I introduced him to mine.  There was an immediate bonding among many of us.  As Trudy Luther mentioned, the boyfriend/girlfriend thing really worked well as it helped us all stay together and have lots of fun.  And Jack was always the center of it as he was very well respected by his old classmates, and soon the new classmates learned to love and respect Jack as well.  Even though at Kenmore West Jack and I weren't as close, we still were good friends, and after graduation I saw him a few times on the Elmwood strip.  He was often with Jeff Millen, another one of us half year kids, and a close friend of Jack's.

My tribute and memory of Jack was not only the fun times, but mostly how he taught me and others how to work hard, be tireless in pursuit of your goals, and never give up. And have a sense of humor.  Nothing seemed to come easily for Jack, but he followed his beliefs, and therefore accomplished his objectives.  He loved sports, and one of his proudest accomplishments was playing varsity football for West.  I lost touch with Jack, but learned after his death that he went on to be a successful Physical Therapist.  Rest in Peace, our Friend.

The photo of a Jack is correct, but the death notice is not. Jack passed in 1991 after a ten year battle with a brain tumor. He had served on a US Navy nuclear submarine during Vietnam which is probably where he contracted the cancer.

Jack and I met as half-year students at Hoover when we were five years old. I remember meeting Mary Ann Haines that day as well. We went through Hoover and Ken West together, then UB. In 1966 we were at Wildwood Beach when we passed a car with a flat tire and three or four young ladies in distress. Jack changed the flat and I mostly watched. Jack was always the first to offer someone a hand. Jack ran into the young lady who was driving that day about six months later. They started to date and eventually married. Jack and Pat had two sons, Joshua and Jeremiah. Our families vacationed together at Sunset Bay for many years. We even live on the same street.

Jack was always sincere, helpful, humorous in a self-deprecating way, and a good friend. Thanks, Bob Mioducki for your post.
